How “Natural” Do You Want Your Dentures?
Most of us don’t want people to immediately guess that we have dentures. That’s why we want our dentures to have a natural appearance. When it comes to food, most of us realize by now that “natural” is not the same as “good” or “healthy.” The same is true of dentures. There are many features that natural teeth tend to gain as we age that most of us wouldn’t want to be reproduced in our dentures.
The good news is that a FOY ® Dentures dentist can give you dentures that look attractive and don’t look fake, even if there are some “natural” tooth features we avoid.
Appearance of Natural Teeth as We Age
As we age, our teeth bear the marks of all the years we have experienced. This leads to features that become a dead giveaway of our age.
Teeth become discolored naturally with age. A combination of staining and wear on dental enamel causes them to darken with age, a process that doesn’t really stop. People in their 70s tend to have darker tooth color than those in their 50s.
Teeth also tend to wear down with age, changing proportion as a result. Altered tooth proportion is an easily recognized sign of age.
Receding gums are common with age, and, as a result, people tend to develop black triangles between their teeth. This is another sign of age that is easily recognized and can contribute to an unhealthy tooth appearance.
Cracks, chips, and other defects caused by injury, decay, and wear of teeth are also more common as we age. Even when repaired, these can lead to the uneven coloration of the teeth, which can reduce satisfaction with the appearance of your teeth.
Dentures That Look Like Natural Teeth
When we design FOY® Dentures, we work with Williams Dental Laboratory, which utilizes the most natural-looking materials and techniques. This includes:
- Attractive gum texturing
- Natural teeth luster
- Custom tooth shape
For many dentures, the gums are just the base material. Traditional dentures use a plain reddish flat plastic (PMMA) for the base material. Choices for gum tissue color are limited, and some people might have to get a denture that doesn’t match their own gums.
However, with FOY® Dentures, we take several steps to make the gums look more natural. We utilize a layering technique that gives gums the translucency and depth of natural gum tissue, including the appearance of blood vessels.
Another problem with traditional dentures is that they often use the same plastic material for teeth as for the gums. However, with FOY® Dentures, we use teeth made from advanced ceramics. These cosmetic materials are similar to porcelain veneers–they give you a beautiful, natural-looking smile. These teeth are also sharper and stronger than the common plastic teeth.
With traditional dentures, people often get the same standard smile as everyone else. However, with FOY® Dentures, you can customize your smile. Get back the smile of your youth, or get the smile of your dreams. It’s your choice. What you won’t get is a set of dead-giveaway “denture teeth.”
Teeth Can Look Natural and Attractive
Obviously, there are many features of aged teeth that we don’t want to reproduce in your dentures. First of all, the facelift effect of FOY® Dentures is due partly to reversing the effects of tooth wear. Your denture dentist will also not reproduce black triangles or damage your teeth. Nobody wants these unsightly and unhealthy-looking features in their smile.
However, your denture dentist can achieve natural tooth proportions that will give you an attractive, natural tooth appearance that looks healthy and young. You can talk about the proper tooth color and gum color for your dentures so you can have a smile that looks right for your skin, lips, and other aspects of your appearance. As with other aspects of FOY® Dentures, the goal is a natural but rejuvenating result. You will look like you with a natural smile–just years younger. How much younger you want to look is up to you.
During your consultation with a denture dentist, you can talk about your ideal smile. Working together, you can decide which features of a natural smile you want to incorporate and which ones you want to leave behind. A FOY ® Dentures dentist gives you control over your dentures so you can get results that will give you confidence in your dentures.
