Everything You Need to Know About Dental Fillings
In the event that a portion of your tooth decays, breaks, cracks, or is worn down, Dr. Stephen Seidler can provide treatment in the form of a dental filling. This practice is completely safe, and is considered a routine procedure. There are even different types of fillings available to be decided upon between your dentist and yourself. Read on for an overview of what you need to know about dental fillings.
The Process
The first step in providing a dental filling is removing the decayed portion of the tooth; so Dr. Seidler will start by applying a local anesthetic so that you will feel no pain. Depending on the amount of decay that your tooth has experienced, the decay may be eliminated using one of two ways: a dental drill or an air abrasion instrument. Next, the area will be cleaned of bacteria and the filling will be applied. The filling, which is tooth-colored will be built up in layers and a curing light will harden each layer. Finally, Dr. Seidler will shape, trim, and polish the filling.
Maintenance
Maintaining a filling is very similar to maintaining your teeth normally. You should floss every day, visit your dentist appropriately, and brush your teeth several times a day, using fluoride toothpaste. It is especially important that you make sure to see your dentist regularly after receiving a filling in case it cracks or leaks. If a crack or leak does occur, trapped saliva may cause your tooth to decay; fortunately, your dentist can correct this.
