A Patient’s Guide to Endodontic Therapy
Inside each tooth is nerve tissue, called pulp. Damage to the tooth or advanced decay can result in infection or injury to the pulp and cause pain. Endodontic therapy, or a root canal, is specialized dental treatment to address the inner tissues of a tooth as an alternative to extracting and replacing it.
What Is a Root Canal?
A root canal is a dental treatment that can save your tooth from extraction. During root canal therapy, your dentist removes damaged or diseased tissue from the inside of your tooth. After treatment, your tooth will be capped with a crown to provide stability and protection. Root canal treatment typically requires two dental visits. During your first visit, damaged tissue and bacteria are removed and the inside of the tooth is sealed using a rubbery material called gutta-percha. Sealing prevents further infection and adds stability to the tooth. Measurements of your mouth and teeth are taken so that a permanent crown can be fabricated, and a temporary crown is put into place. Once the permanent crown is ready, a second appointment is made and your dentist will affix it with dental cement.
Why Are Root Canals Necessary?
A badly infected or damaged tooth causes pain. Infection can spread to your gums or the bone of your jaw, causing more pain and threatening the health of your entire smile. Root canal treatment is an alternative to extracting the tooth and replacing it by artificial means, allowing you to retain your natural and healthy smile. Although the term root canal often carries unpleasant connotations, root canal treatment is as painless and easy as having a cavity filled. It also takes less time and costs less than extracting and replacing the tooth.
