A Basic Look at Dental Implants
Nearly 70% of adults over the age of 35 have lost at least one tooth, while over 25% of adults past the age of 74 have lost all of their natural teeth, according to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Missing teeth can cause further dental problems over time, including bone loss in the jaw and additional lost teeth. Dental implants offer an ideal option to replace missing teeth to restore form and function to your smile.
What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant has three parts: the implant post, the abutment, and the crown. The implant post is made of titanium and inserted into the jaw surgically. This mimics the lost tooth root and prevents future bone loss in the surrounding area. The abutment attaches to the top of the post and protrudes from the gums. A dental crown is attached to the abutment to replace the visible part of your lost tooth.
What Is the Dental Implant Procedure?
The process of receiving a dental implant may take months to complete. First, your dentist surgically places the titanium post into your jaw. The abutment may be placed during or after this procedure. If your jaw does not have enough bone density to support the post, a bone graft may be required. The jaw is given time to heal and fuse with the post. Once the site has fully healed, the crown is attached and your new smile is complete.
Who Is a Candidate for Dental Implants?
Patients of all ages are good candidates for dental implants. If you have lost teeth due to an accident, injury, or dental disease such as tooth decay or gum disease, you can benefit from dental implants. If you currently wear a full or partial denture, ask your dentist about implant-supported bridges or dentures.
